Make free calls to other Skype users.

Free calls to other Skype users.

Internet telephone specialist Skype has launched a new version of its iPhone software optimized for work with the latest Apple iPhone OS 3 software and iPhone 3GS hardware.

Skype on the iPhone enables users to make free Skype to Skype voice calls and have free text based chat sessions with other Skype users.

In our tests, the previous version of Skype for the iPhone worked well with OS 3, but users would sometimes see a message saying OS 3 was not supported by that version of Skype.

If people pay money to Skype they can also make phone calls and send SMS messages to people anywhere in the world using their iPhone. Skype SMS messages can be sent via an ordinary cellular data connection, but Skype phone calls must use the iPhone’s WiFi connection.

Unfortunately Apple places restrictions on third party apps which mean Skype cannot run in the background on the iPhone. Therefore Skype must be the active application on the iPhone for people to be notified that they have received a Skype phone call. We would like to see a feature where Skype sent an email to users when they received a Skype call and their Skype software was not online.

Skype software for the iPhone is free of charge and can be downloaded from here.
